We think of Bleaker Island as one of the Falklands’ most scenic destinations. Despite its name, it’s known for beautiful beaches and diverse wildlife – the name itself is thought to come from a corruption of “Breaker”, a reference to the waves breaking against the island’s shallow shores.
About 85km south-west of Stanley, Bleaker Island offers an impressive concentration of Falkland Islands wildlife within a relatively compact area. You can see three species of penguin here, alongside marine mammals and a wide variety of birdlife.
The island’s coastline is particularly rewarding – sea lions are often seen hunting and playing in the surf, while elephant seals gather on the beaches, showing off their impressive size and strength.
