Hannah had an early introduction to Latin America when her family moved to Ecuador for two years when she was just ten years old, and she returned again for a year in Buenos Aires as a student. A graduate in Spanish and Politics, she has put her language skills to good use by travelling widely throughout Latin America and has been to very nearly every country in the region.

Of all the places she has encountered along the way, her favourites include the salt flats of Uyuni and the hidden beaches of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. However, Buenos Aires also retains a special place in her heart: she looks back very fondly on playing pool in elegant cafes and eating steak every day for a year! Before joining us, Hannah also taught English for two years in Southeast Asia and worked in the wine industry. Hannah is a long-standing Travel Expert in our Tailor-made Holidays and Group Tour sales team.

PersonAL favourites:

Place:

My favourite place is the altiplano of Bolivia, specifically the salt flats, geysers, volcanoes and lakes of the highlands towards the Chilean border. The whole area is other-worldly, absolutely beautiful with contrasting colours and landscapes – it’s like nowhere else on the continent.

Hotel:

One of my favourite hotels is Casa Las Tortugas on Holbox in Mexico. Go for the split-level beachfront room with a balcony right over the white-sand beach. It’s not a luxurious hotel but it has just the right laid-back vibe for Holbox, and a great restaurant just downstairs on the beach front serving fresh seafood. You need never wear shoes again!

Excursion:

My favourite excursion has been the Big Ice glacier trekking on Perito Moreno. To be able to walk on one of the largest and most spectacular glaciers in Latin America, with the amazing blue light of the ice and the freezing streams running through the crevices is just fantastic.

Top Travel Tip

For an almost unvisited but hugely rewarding area, head up to the Llanos in Colombia. The savannah-like landscape is home to anteaters, pumas and anacondas to name but a few of the species you will see here. You go out on safaris on horseback or by open top jeep to see the wildlife and the llanero cowboys at work herding cattle.

Top Packing Tip

Pack lightly. You really don’t need half the things you think you do and you won’t be caught out by airlines with low luggage limits. Aim for 10kgs as hold luggage. Also leaves room for the inevitable souvenirs – Peruvian weavings take up a lot of space!

My Destination Highlights

Cosmopolitan city with diverse neighbourhoods, beautiful architecture and really friendly people. And the best steak in the world.

A combination of colonial architecture, a market brimming with fresh produce and handicrafts and the delicious local food makes Oaxaca one of the best destinations in Mexico.

A classic but the experience of snorkelling simultaneously with penguins, sea lions, sea turtles and sharks is pretty much unbeatable.
