Travel notice

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office currently advises against all but essential travel to Cuba, following fuel shortages and power disruption across the island. This affects transport, services and flight schedules. We’re monitoring the situation closely and will advise on your options. Cienfuegos
What to expect from your holiday in Cuba

Our Cuba holidays take you across the largest and most characterful of the Caribbean islands, from the cobbled streets of Old Havana to the tobacco fields of Viñales and the beaches of the south coast. The landscape shifts as you go, from the limestone hills west of the capital, through plantation country, to the forested Sierra Maestra in the east. Spanish is the official language, and life is lived loudly, from Havana to Santiago de Cuba.

Trinidad
Cuban culture and history

Music is everywhere in Cuba, spilling out of doorways and courtyards from breakfast onwards. The island’s history runs just as close to the surface, from the colonial squares of Trinidad to the revolution museums of Havana and Fidel Castro’s old mountain hideouts in the Sierra Maestra. You’ll see it in the Baroque churches, the political murals and the 1950s American cars still working the streets, kept running through five decades of ingenuity.

Baracoa

Beaches and countryside

Away from the cities, Cuba slows right down. In the Viñales valley, steep limestone mogotes rise over red-earth tobacco fields and rows of royal palms. The offshore cays and the south coast hold long stretches of soft white sand and warm, calm water, while the Escambray mountains near Trinidad offer cool walking through cloud forest and coffee country. It’s an easy, rewarding contrast to the noise of Havana.

Bring cash. Cards don’t work in Cuba, and the best moments, a meal at a casa particular or a band playing for tips in a Havana courtyard, are all paid in person.

When to visit Cuba

Cuba has a tropical climate with two clear seasons, so the best time to visit depends mostly on the weather you’re after. Temperatures sit around 25 to 28°C for much of the year, cooler at altitude.

Average maximum daytime temperature
27°C
Average minimum nighttime temperature
19°C
Average days per season rainfall

Average humidity
Low

The sunny days and blue skies of Cuba’s dry season make this the best time to visit. Temperatures are hot but not too humid, and there is less chance of rainfall. Try outdoor activities such as hiking in the Sierra Maestra mountains, horse riding in Las Terrazas or snorkelling among sea turtles in the warm, limpid waters of the cayes. To visit during these months it’s important to plan far in advance, as hotels will be busy. Important events to lookout for include Havana’s International Jazz Festival in December, and the Semana Santa Easter processions in Trinidad.

Moderate

This is the wet season in Cuba, though the heaviest rains do not set in until late July. Temperatures rise and humidity levels increase, with frequent rainfall and the risk of hurricanes from Aug – Nov. While the unpredictable weather conditions are not ideal for many outdoor activities, this can still be an atmospheric time to visit. Carnival in July (sometimes Aug) is celebrated across many of Cuba’s cities and towns, with traditional drumming rhythms, flamboyant costumes and buzzing parades. The largest and most traditional of these Carnival celebrations is found in Santiago de Cuba.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Cuba

We hand-pick every property for character, location and quality. Cuba’s accommodation runs from privately run guesthouses, the casas particulares, to state hotels and restored colonial buildings. In Havana, a handful of colonial buildings in the old town have become small hotels and guesthouses that book up fast, so it’s worth securing them early. In Trinidad, most stays are casas within walking distance of the main plaza, while the beach cays lean towards larger resort hotels.

Simple, likeable hotel in a restored colonial house occupying an ideal location in the centre of town.
