Latin America isn’t the obvious beach destination, and that’s exactly its appeal. Miles of Caribbean sand, Pacific surf towns and remote islands, usually with a fraction of the crowds. A beach holiday here works best as the finish to a bigger trip, a few days to slow down after the ruins, the trekking or the wildlife.

What a beach holiday here looks like

The coastlines are as varied as the continent. There’s the clear Caribbean water and white sand of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil’s north-east; the wild Pacific surf of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Ecuador; and far-flung islands like Fernando de Noronha or the San Blas archipelago, where the beach is the whole point. Some spots are for doing nothing at all, others for snorkelling, surfing or dining on fresh seafood straight off the boat. We’ll match the beach to the mood you’re after.

Where to go on a beach holiday

A few coasts stand out. Mexico’s Yucatán and Caribbean coast for warm, clear water and easy reach from the Maya ruins. Brazil for beach islands and the long north-eastern shore. Colombia for the Caribbean around Cartagena and Tayrona. Costa Rica for two coastlines and the surf, and Cuba for the cays off the mainland. Most beach stays pair with a wider trip, and we’ll slot the coast in where it fits best.
