Tambopata Research Centre
Remote and extraordinary lodge, far from signs of civilisation, with access to pristine rainforest and the world’s largest macaw clay lick.
The exuberant Tambopata National Reserve hosts a variety of tropical habitats, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riverine forest and oxbow lakes. The Tambopata Research Centre is happily permitted to sit within the Reserve because it was established before the area received protected status. A stay here is therefore a real privilege, and the wildlife spotting opportunities are among the best in Amazonia. The lodge is just a short boat ride from the world’s largest macaw clay lick, visited by up to six species of parrot and throngs of parakeets, which feed on the mineral rich soil, creating an agitated spectacle of colour and sound.
The attractive lodge is made entirely from locally-sourced natural materials, with highly polished wooden flooring, and pitched thatched roofs. It’s a cosy place, with an intimate and friendly atmosphere. The buildings and guest rooms are certainly rustic in style, but modernised: there’s a spacious feel with beneath the lofty ceilings. Furnishings and earthy-hued fabrics are pleasing, especially the bathrooms, with hot water showers.
All the guest rooms and suites are completely exposed to the natural jungle environment on one side to maximise the magical experience of proximity to the tropical rainforest. You’ll be invited to eat your nutritious home-cooked meals alongside the guides, giving you a chance to review the day’s activities and plan the next. If you’d like to explore a special interest or simply prefer a more exclusive experience, private guides are available. Following hours of jungle discovery you’ll be ready to enjoy relaxing at the lodge; lounge in an inviting hammock, or book in for a unique and soothing jungle-style massage.
