Guacimo Lodge
Perched above the Río San Juan, deep within southeastern Nicaragua, Guácimo Lodge is surrounded by its own private reserve of primary and secondary rainforest, at the edge of the vast Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, one of the largest protected rainforest areas in Central America. Reaching this remote lodge is part of the adventure: a two-hour…
The surrounding forests and waterways are among Nicaragua’s richest wildlife habitats. Spider, howler and capuchin monkeys move through the canopy, while sloths, anteaters, caiman and turtles inhabit the rainforest and riverbanks. More elusive residents include ocelots and even jaguars, while over 200 bird species have been recorded in the area. Guided activities are included, with opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife spotting, night walks and a tour of El Castillo, a fortress built by the Spanish to fend off pirate attacks.
The lodge has just six cabins, designed to minimise their environmental impact and make the most of the natural surroundings. They’re rustic but comfortable and come with private bathrooms, screened windows, mosquito nets, solar-powered lighting and terraces overlooking the rainforest. Birdsong and the calls of howler monkeys provide a constant reminder of the rainforest setting.
Meals are included and served in the open-sided riverside restaurant, while a small swimming pool offers a welcome place to cool off after a day exploring the forest.
