Exploring the city of Salta

Take a guided stroll around the relaxed city of Salta, with its colonial architecture and leafy plazas.
Set between the eastern foothills of the Andes and the fertile Lerma Valley, Salta is often considered one of Argentina’s most attractive cities. Founded in 1582 on an important Spanish trade route, it retains a strong sense of its colonial past, with palm-shaded plazas, ornate churches and arcaded streets at the heart of the city.
Our experiences offer different ways to discover the city and its distinctive north-west Argentine culture. Wander through the historic centre, visit the cathedral and San Francisco Church, and take in sweeping views from San Bernardo Hill. We also recommend setting aside time for the excellent MAAM Museum, whose collection provides a fascinating insight into the region’s Indigenous and Inca heritage.
Salta is equally rewarding away from its landmarks. Sample the city’s renowned empanadas salteñas, browse local handicraft markets and, after dark, visit a traditional peña, where local musicians perform folk music as diners gather over regional food and wine.
Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, food or music, Salta offers an engaging introduction to one of Argentina’s most culturally distinctive regions.
