What to expect from your Iberá Wetlands holiday

This is wildlife country. The Iberá Wetlands spread across the province of Corrientes in northern Argentina, a vast tapestry of marsh, lagoons, floating islands and silvery streams. Iberá means ‘shining waters’ in Guaraní, and at around 1.3 million hectares it’s the second-largest wetland in the world after Brazil’s Pantanal. Once heavily hunted, it’s now a protected reserve, with Iberá National Park, and the wildlife has come returning in huge numbers since 2018.

The great draw is how close you get to the animals. Caiman line the banks, capybara graze in the open, and marsh deer wade through the reeds, often within a few metres of a slow, quiet boat. Over 350 species of bird live here, from herons and storks to the rare species birdwatchers travel for, and giant anteaters shuffle across the grasslands.

Iberá is also home to one of South America’s boldest conservation projects. Species lost from the region have been brought back one by one, giant anteaters, pampas deer and red-and-green macaws among them, and in 2020 the jaguar returned to these wetlands after around 70 years away.

The remoteness that once kept Iberá off the map is part of its appeal. Tourism here is deliberately low-key, built around a handful of friendly lodges and estancias where the focus is on relaxation and wildlife watching. The little village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, on the shore of Laguna Iberá, is the usual base, and most trips pair boat safaris with walks, horse rides and time to simply take it in.

When to visit Ibera wetlands

Iberá is a year-round destination. Wildlife can be seen at any time of year, and the birdwatching is at its best from autumn through spring. Seasons run opposite to the UK, so summer falls around the turn of the year.

During the summer months, temperatures in the wetlands become very hot and humidity is relatively high. Wildlife thrives and migrating birds are visible en masse, but this is not an ideal time for outdoor activities as the heat can feel extreme.

Autumn brings cooler climates which are ideal for exploring outdoors. Birdwatching is excellent in March and April, when the wetlands are a habitat for hundreds of species of birds.

Spring time is colourful in the wetlands, with spectacular wildlife viewing as breeding season begins. Temperatures are warm but not uncomfortably hot, although there is the most amount of rain during these months. Hundreds of species of birds are visible across the wetlands including the rare White-headed Marsh Tyrant or the impressive Sickle-winged Nightjar.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Ibera wetlands

Accommodation here is about friendly, low-key lodges rather than big hotels, and we hand-pick each one for its setting, character and wildlife access. Most sit around Colonia Carlos Pellegrini on Laguna Iberá, from simple, welcoming posadas to more comfortable lodges and characterful estancias deeper in the reserve, several with guiding and boat trips built in. Staying inside the wetlands means you’re out on the water at the best times of day, before any day visitors arrive.
