What to expect
Itinerary

Explore the tour day by day, from the highlights to the quieter moments in between. Here’s how each day unfolds and what to expect along the way.

Day 1 - San Jose
Arrive in San José and transfer to countryside resort..

You will be met at the airport by our local representative who will take you to your hotel in the attractive fertile countryside of Costa Rica’s Central Valley.

Xandari Resort and Spa

Xandari Resort & Spa is tucked away in the hills above San José but is only a 10-kilometre drive from the airport. Set within 40 acres of tropical gardens and with birds flitting from tree to tree, it makes a relaxing base for those wishing to avoid a stay in the congested capital.

The hotel has clusters of boldly decorated villas, each one well-appointed and housing one or two large guestrooms and a private terrace with impressive views over the Central Valley particularly at night. Their décor is far from bland and features vibrant original works of art, stained glass windows and colourful mosaics.

The open-air restaurant serves a varied farm-to-table menu with much of the produce grown onsite. There are three swimming pools and a good quality spa, and guests can explore the 4km of private nature trails which meander through the property’s gardens past waterfalls.

Day 2
At leisure on the property.

At leisure at the property: Xandari Resort & Spa is more than just a hotel –the private forest reserve, with five waterfalls and many of trails for bird-watching give you an introduction to Costa Rica’s abundant wildlife and rich tropical landscapes. Enjoy the well tended gardens, the orchid house, and the farm. The Spa provides ample opportunity to unwind and to relax.

Day 3 - Arenal
By road to Arenal volcano area.

Drive to the Arenal volcano region. As the sun begins to set, you might hike across a barren landscape dotted with rocks and shrubs, from which you may see the flows of molten lava being discharged from Arenal’s fiery cone (although the volcano can be dormant for months so there is no guarantee of its activity and there hasn’t been any for some years).

Beautiful view of the green side of the Arenal volcano, Costa Rica.
Amor Arenal

The wilderness feels close here, with natural spring pools in which to bathe, trails leading into the forest and privileged views of the volcanic cone above the treetops. This is a place where you can relax and be pampered as well as explore the Arenal Volcano National Park close by.

Amor Arenal’s rooms are actually casitas and are beautifully crafted so as not to detract from the overwhelmingly natural feel of the place: rich hardwood floors and frames are offset by exposed stone feature walls and floor to ceiling windows. Each has either 1 King-size or 2 Queen-size beds with crisp linens, a wide terrace and its own plunge pool, and their elevated positions are designed to catch the breeze. All casitas are air-conditioned, with great attention to detail to ensure most luxurious amenities and modern conveniences have been thought of including a well-stocked complimentary minibar, coffee maker, cable TV and Wi-Fi. Although the hotel’s setting means there is an element of uphill/downhill walking between your room and the facilities, golf carts are available to take you around the expansive property should you desire.

The hotel’s main restaurant, El Rancho, offers a varied menu with a focus on local, sustainable produce. A selection of exclusive dining experiences is available too with a ‘Chef’s Corner’ tasting menu or a private dinner in the hotel’s wine cellar. If you fancy a coffee and a freshly baked pastry or sandwich then stop by La Granea, the hotel’s coffee shop.

The focus on wellness at Amor Arenal means there is a beautiful open-air spa for massages and other treatments, and guests can enjoy a complimentary daily wellness class (yoga, meditation or sound healing). Other facilities include two natural pools, a separate wet bar, and a gym. There are also a couple of trails through the property which you can explore by yourself or in the company of a naturalist guide.

Day 4
Excursion to Arenal Volcano.

The 225-hectare El Silencio Private Reserve is a short drive from La Fortuna and offers a selection of hiking trails in the foothills of Arenal Volcano. Accompanied by a guide who will tell you all about the area’s history and geology, you’ll follow the 1km Lava Field’s trail which climbs up to a viewpoint overlooking the volcano. Although very short, the trail is quite steep in places and generally uneven due to the black jagged rocks which once exploded out of the volcano, most notably in 1968.

Day 5
Optional hanging bridges, lake kayaking or Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.

Today you have a free day to explore the region. Maybe walk the 3km long canopy trail through primary forest linked by 6 hanging bridges and 8 fixed bridges, some measuring up to 22m in length. Along with the region’s diverse wildlife and plants you can expect good views of the volcano.

Alternatively, kayak on lake Arenal at the foot of the volcano or explore Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve.  Tours operate along Río Frío, a slow-flowing river that winds through canyons on its way to the Caño Negro Lake. Along the shores of the river and in the trees you’ll be able to spot birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. There are howler, spider and white-faced monkeys, three-toed sloth, caimans, turtles, and lizards. Keep your eyes on the river, too – there’s the chance of spotting the fin of a freshwater shark as it slices above the water’s surface.

Day 6 - Monteverde
Drive to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve; twilight tour.

Travel inland by road into highlands mantled by the woodland of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which lies in the rugged, rolling hills northwest of San José. You’ll be driven through the Central Valley along the Pan American Highway, a decent paved road then take the turn off for Monteverde, and here the adventure begins – for up to 90mins the dirt road is bumpy with volcanic rocks, winding up through the hills to the cloud forest at 1,400m. You can expect it to be dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet. However you should be diverted by wildlife you spot along the way – sloth, monkeys and tropical birds – keep your binoculars handy.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most fascinating wildlife sanctuaries in the Americas; it protects more than 400 species of bird and 100 species of mammal. It has many well-marked trails, amidst dense, dripping foliage, sheltering the resplendent quetzal, with its vivid red belly and long green tail, as well as the endangered bellbird and the emerald toucanet. 30 species of hummingbird also reside there.

On your 2hr night walk you’ll look out for nocturnal animals such as olingos, kinkajous, two-toed sloths and opossums, as well as tarantula spiders and snakes. During the rainy season some species of frogs might be spotted. It’s not uncommon to see migrant and resident birds sleeping. Regardless of the wildlife you may see, the experience of walking in the forest at night is very special.

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens

This is one of Costa Rica’s original upcountry lodges and still one of the best. The superb Monteverde Lodge & Gardens nestles within the cloud forest of the Tilaran Mountains, looking out over a striking landscape of crumpled, forested ridges.

This eco-conscious property is built of wood and glass in Scandinavian style, and has two wings with simple rooms that vary in size, all with solar-heated showers. Natural light enters through large floor-to-ceiling windows, and the premier rooms have balconies fringing the cloud forest.

There is an open-plan restaurant with an open log fire and views out over the beautiful landscaped gardens, which are full of native plant species and attract a wide variety of wildlife. In addition to the heated outdoor pool there’s a large hot tub in which to unwind at the end of a busy day exploring the natural surroundings.

Day 7
Guided exploration of Santa Elena Reserve.

Santa Elena Reserve sits at a slightly higher elevation (over 1,500m) than the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It was founded in 1992 by a group of Canadian volunteers to preserve the cloud forest which hosts quetzals, deer, sloths, ocelots and howler, and capuchin monkeys. There are around 12 km of trails, three lookout points and an observation tower from which on a clear day you can spy five volcanoes. It’s an atmospheric place with mosses, ferns and flowers embellishing the trees, while vines dangle over the trails. Your adventure is led by a local guide.

In the afternoon there’s an optional visit to a coffee finca. Don Juan Cruz was born to one of the first pioneering farming families to arrive in the Monteverde area and welcomes visitors to his small farm. You’ll learn about the entire coffee- and chocolate-making processes using authentic techniques which date back several generations.

Day 8 - Nosara, Nicoya Peninsula
Transfer to beach resort hotel on the Nicoya Peninsula, Pacific coast.

Travel by road (5hrs) to the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific coast. Equally denuded of forest as the adjoining mainland, it is culturally and physically cut off from the rest of the country: inland, dotted with small, modest towns far removed from the beach resorts on the bay-pocked coastline. You’ll be staying one of these, within reach of yawning beaches attacked by crashing Pacific rollers.

Lagarta Lodge
DCIM100MEDIADJI_0033.JPG

Set on a bluff overlooking a string of beaches and the Pacific Ocean, Lagarta Lodge has a privileged location on Costa Rica’s undeveloped Nicoya Peninsula and is one of our favourite hotels.

It isn’t a beachfront hotel but there are several beautiful beaches nearby which you can reach on foot or using the complimentary shuttle service. Playa Pelada, a sheltered bay with calm waters, is the closest and a 15-minute walk away. To the south is Playa Guiones, an impressive 7km long and a popular spot for surfing, and to the north is Playa Ostional, a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles. If you’re lucky, your stay may coincide with an ‘arribada’ when thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach.

The property comprises 36 spacious suites each with its own veranda or terrace and decorated in neutral colours to reflect the natural surroundings. Meals are served at the al-fresco Chirriboca restaurant which focusses on local, organically grown produce, and the Gecko Lounge is perfect for a sundowner. Wherever you are in the hotel you will be treated to a breathtaking view.

This is an ideal place to spend several days at the end of your trip, relaxing and enjoying the scenic setting and facilities. There are two infinity pools, a pool with a wet bar, a children’s pool, and a jacuzzi, as well as a spa and yoga studio.

Those feeling more active can explore the adjacent nature reserve, a unique subtropical dry forest, on their own or in the company of a naturalist guide. The walk takes two hours and mornings in particular offer good wildlife-spotting opportunities: howler monkeys, anteaters, coatis, raccoons, iguanas, butterflies, insects, and many species of birds. Other activities such as boat trips on the Rio Nosara and surf lessons can also be booked.

Days 9-10
At leisure on the beach.

Many activities can be arranged form the resort if you don’t want to spend all your time sunning yourself beside the pool or watching tangerine sunsets over the ocean with a cold beer in your hand. Golf and hiking, horse-riding, snorkelling and mountain biking expeditions are all available.

Overview
Places Visited

The places you’ll stay and explore on this tour. Here’s a closer look at each one and what makes it worth the trip.

The cultural and geographical heart of Costa Rica, where volcanic landscapes, coffee plantations, fertile valleys and historic towns surround the country’s busy capital. Central Highlands Costa Rica holidays and San José city break itineraries both tend to start here, combining culture, nature, cuisine and easy access to many of the country’s highlights.

San Jose, central highlands and central valleys

One of Costa Rica’s most iconic regions, where a perfectly conical volcano rises above rainforest, wildlife-rich reserves, hot springs and adventure-filled landscapes. From Arenal Volcano to cloud forest, hanging bridges and rushing rivers, this is Costa Rica at its most classic – and Arenal Volcano holidays remain some of the country’s most memorable.

Arenal and the north

Monteverde holidays offer the chance to explore one of Costa Rica’s richest cloud forests, where mist drifts through moss-covered trees and orchids thrive amongst abundant wildlife. Famous for its atmospheric scenery and spring-like climate, Monteverde is also one of the best places in Central America to spot the resplendent quetzal.

Monteverde and the cloud forest

Costa Rica’s laid-back Pacific paradise, where long stretches of golden sand, hidden bays and coastal villages create the perfect beach escape. Separated from much of the country by the Gulf of Nicoya and Guanacaste’s dry ranching landscapes, the Nicoya Peninsula Costa Rica keeps largely to itself, offering a peaceful, authentic side of the country.

Nicoya Peninsula
Overview
Highlights

Combine outdoor adventures with beach wind-down time on the Pacific coast. Costa Rica is bursting with an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna and its people are among the friendliest in Latin America. The comprehensive network of national parks with their extensive trails is always very accessible. This short holiday uses modern, shared minibuses for transport between hotels.

Begin your adventure with a couple of days exploring the beautiful landscapes in the shadow of the picture-perfect Arenal Volcano. Move on to discover the densely packed canopy in the Monteverde cloud forest, with its rich bird and animal life on display. After this, travel to the Pacific coast and stay at a beach resort on the Nicoya Peninsula for a few days’ relaxation.

Essential
What it means

Stay in comfortable, well-located hotels chosen to keep you close to the action. These are reliable, practical places with everything you need for a good night’s sleep, sometimes a smaller or family-run find, sometimes a larger, more functional hotel. It’s a straightforward style of stay that keeps costs down and leaves more of your budget for the experiences themselves.

Premium
What it means

Return each evening to well-appointed hotels chosen for their comfort and setting. Rooms are spacious and properly equipped, with all the mod cons you’d expect, and facilities to include a restaurant, a bar or lounge, and often a pool or spa to unwind in. It’s an easy, comfortable style of travel, with somewhere relaxed to look forward to each day.

Essential
What it means

Settle into stylish hotels picked for their character, setting and service. That might be a luxurious city hotel like the Loi Suites in Buenos Aires, or somewhere with a setting you won’t forget, a former estancia on the Patagonian steppe or a lodge at the foot of Machu Picchu. This is our most memorable style, where the hotel becomes part of the journey itself.
