Offering rustic luxury in an untouched tropical setting, Morgan’s Rock is designed to blend into the natural surroundings – so much so that trees grow through some of the roofs.
This wonderful eco-lodge overlooks the Pacific coast, 40 minutes from the port of San Juan del Sur. The lodge is at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Nicaragua, preserving 4,000 acres of primary forest, while protecting and re-introducing endangered wildlife.
The smart, atmospheric rooms, decorated in earthy shades, are bound on three sides by screens, so you can delight in the forest symphony put on by howler monkeys and a wealth of exotic birds. The 15 thatched, hardwood cabins cascade down a forested hillside towards a pearl-white beach untroubled by development of any kind.
There’s also an infinity swimming pool, and the semi-open thatched restaurant serves regional, French and Asian cuisine, much of it grown or reared on premises.
Wildlife is abundant, and the area can be explored independently or guided on foot, by kayak, mountain bike or on horseback. If visiting between August and November, don’t miss the chance to watch turtles hatching on the beach by the light of the moon.
Sustainability has been central to the construction and design of the lodge with local artisans used in its interior design, and sustainably sourced wood for furniture and infrastructure. Through reforestation, tree planting, environmental awareness and education Morgan’s Rock helps defend the area against poaching, illegal logging and deforestation. Guests can learn about reforestation, accompany the lodge’s own fishermen, and visit its farm, sugar mill or butterfly farm.
