What to expect from your Matagalpa & Northern Nicaragua holiday

Matagalpa is a breath of fresh mountainous air, a highland town where liberal descendants of old coffee plantation owners rub shoulders with Sandinista-supporting subsistence farmers. It’s a very different Nicaragua to the one found on the Pacific coast: here, cooler temperatures and cloud forest scenery dominate, creating the kind of conditions that suit both wildlife and agriculture in equal measure.

The cool climate is ideal for growing vegetables and grazing cattle, while pristine cloud forest gives this region some of the best shade-grown coffee in the country, and makes it a genuine must-see for birders and hikers alike. It’s also where Nicaragua’s finest chocolate is produced, and the birthplace of Sandinista founder Carlos Fonseca, whose family home is now a small museum in the town.

Travellers who make it up here find a quieter side of Nicaragua, one of scenic countryside, rural tradition and nature-based activities rather than beach resorts. That slower pace, paired with striking scenery, makes the north an excellent addition to a broader Nicaragua itinerary.

When to visit Matagalpa and the north

The highland location gives Matagalpa a noticeably different climate to Nicaragua’s coastal areas, with warm days and much cooler nights at altitude throughout the year.

Days are warm and balmy year-round, but nights turn markedly cooler at this altitude, so it’s worth packing a layer for the evenings. This drier stretch tends to suit hiking and birdwatching best.

Rainy season sets in from the end of May, with humidity rising alongside it. The upside is scenery at its lushest and greenest, which many find just as rewarding for a visit as the drier months.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Matagalpa and the north

Accommodation in northern Nicaragua is built around the region’s mountain scenery, natural surroundings and rural atmosphere rather than resort-style comfort. Selva Negra Lodge, set amid its own cloud forest reserve, is a good example of the kind of tranquil, nature-focused stay that draws people here in the first place, with cloud forest habitat and outdoor activities right on the doorstep.

Selva Negra Lodge is an organic coffee estate in Northern Nicaragua, welcoming visitors with a range of outdoor activities.
