Full of knowledge and passion, Liz shares her most memorable moments in Latin America and the benefits of travelling on a group tour.
Which tour do you lead?
Over the years I've lead most of our tours across South America but I mainly do the tours which go to Peru and Patagonia. The high season is one of the low season in the other so the two keep me busy throughout the whole year.
When did you join Journey Latin America?
In 2010, it's coming up to my 9 year anniversary.
When did you first travel to Latin America?
In 2004 I went on holiday to Peru which I actually booked through Journey Latin America. I fell so deeply in love with the country that I made the decision to quit my job and bought an around the world ticket. As much as I loved the experience and all the different places I discovered along the way, my heart was still in Latin America, which is why when the trip came to an end, that's where I decided to live.
What's your favourite place in Latin America?
This is an easy one, Cusco, the city I finally settled in and call home till this day. I also love Torres del Paine, it's my second favourite place in the world.
What makes Latin America special?
Every country is unique, you can't compare them. There's a real variety of food, music and culture.
Where would you say has changed the most?
Everywhere really, but La Paz, Bolivia is still very much Latino. But it does have modern infrastructure, the government is investing heavily into it and you can really tell. Everything runs smoothly for tourists and locals.
What's your most memorable story in Latin America?
That's a really hard question! Over the years so many special moments have happened but one thing that comes to mind is my encounter with nature. It always manages to take my breath away, no matter how many times I return to the same place. I love to watch the sunrise and sunset, each day it's slightly different.
What would you say are the benefits of travelling on a group tour?
Whether you're a solo traveller, a group of friends or a couple looking to travel with other like-minded people, a group tour gives you the comfort of knowing all the logistics have been thought out for you as well as being able to fit more into your time. Not only by visiting various places for less, but also because the tour leader will be able to share all their knowledge giving you a real insight rather than a superficial glimpse of the country.
What's your favourite place to eat?
Local markets always have the most authentic, fresh and tastiest foods.
A question we're often asked in the office, is Latin America safe?
In most places, the establishments you'll be visiting rely on tourism, so it's in their own interest to make sure that you're safe. The whole street will be looking out for you as well as each other.
