I lived in Rio before I joined Journey Latin America and have taken groups all over Latin America, staying in Rio for a number of nights at a time, and I’ve never had any problems. Like most big cities Rio can be dangerous so it is important to keep your wits about you and to use your common sense. Don’t carry a lot of money around with you, do not wear expensive jewellery, and always take a taxi back to your hotel if it is late at night. One trick I sometimes use is to buy a local newspaper – I find it fools people into thinking I’m a local! Rio is one of my favourite cities in Latin America – the people are really friendly, the food is simply delicious and the beach culture is unique, so don't worry: you’ll have an amazing time!
