Bolivia's tourist infrastructure is still in its infancy, so its hotels and transport often don’t compare with other countries in the continent. That said, Bolivia is truly unique, and its fascinating indigenous culture is very prevalent, even today. Women still walk the streets in their traditional dress of a full skirt and bowler hat and you can take some very intriguing strolls through La Paz with its Witches' Market and vertiginous streets.
In recent years the accommodation has improved and you definitely don't need to slum it – there are some great hotel options that we can recommend, including some very comfortable and characterful hotels in La Paz, Sucre and Potosí. Meanwhile, pre-booked private transfers will make road journeys far less of an ordeal!
If you are keen to visit the country's attractions you can still get a fix of luxury at the end of a trip by combining Bolivia with one of its neighbours. Head to Peru, Chile or Brazil and the infrastructure will improve dramatically – these days they each have their fair share of exceptional 5-star hotels that make for a truly first-class holiday.
For a taste of Bolivia with a luxurious wind-down at the end, my suggestion would be to travel through the Uyuni salt flats and cross into Chile that way. Not only does the journey take you through some of the most mind-bogglingly beautiful and varied landscapes on earth, but the end point of the trip is also a wonderful destination in its own right: San Pedro de Atacama. This is a charming, laid-back town set in the middle of the world's driest desert, surrounded by incredible rock formations and blessed with spectacular sunsets that give way to star-studded night skies. Furthermore it boasts several first-class hotel options, such as Tierra Atacama and Explora Atacama.
