Although beautiful Providencia is the largest of the northern group of islands in an archipelago 480km off the Colombian coast, it is quite undeveloped (definitely a bonus in our opinion), with mostly modest facilities mainly concentrated in the tiny village of Aguadulce. As far as we know there are no mid-range hotel options on the island so we tend to recommend the Sirius guesthouse or the Sol Caribe, a simple hotel.

Here are descriptions of the two properties:

Sirius is a small guesthouse on one of Providencia's most beautiful beaches – Southwest Bay. There are nine simply decorated rooms; all have air conditioning, fridge, flat screen TV and a fan. Master suites have sea views and some have two levels. The water in the bathroom is not heated, but the temperatures are high on the island so you don’t really need hot water. There is a dive school on-site and snorkelling equipment can be easily hired. The hotel serves breakfast only but there are a couple of restaurants serving seafood a very short walk away along the beach. Buggy hire, horse riding and boat trips can all be arranged locally from the hotel.

Sol Caribe is a small, simple hotel located at Fresh Water Bay, 20 minutes from the airport. It has 35 rooms, all of them with minibar, air-con, cable TV and private bathroom. Some of the rooms overlook the swimming pool and others, the bay. There is also a bright restaurant with bench seating.

If you do decide to go for something swisher, you may also be interested to know that there’s a relatively new boutique hotel  in Providencia called Deep Blue, which is lovely.
