How did you get there? I flew out with Aero Mexico and was treated to the Virgin lounge at Heathrow, a great way to start any trip!

How long was the trip?  I was there for two weeks in total.

Whereabouts in Mexico did you go? My first week was spent in the State of Chihuahua where the stunning Copper Canyon lies.  I then flew down to Oaxaca to explore the city and the surrounding countryside, and finally Mexico City.

What was your overall impression of the country like? It’s vast and hugely diverse, so my first and second weeks could have been in different countries. From the desert in the north to the forests surrounding Oaxaca.  The indigenous cultures are also so strong in Mexico and it’s fascinating to learn about the traditions and way of life.

Had you been before? If so, any notable differences?

This was actually my fourth visit to the country, my first as a backpacker fresh out of school (which is sadly far too long ago) and I’ve also travelled there with my young family.  What surprised me about this trip is that the north is so different from what I had seen before and there is so much to explore. Miles away from the Mayan culture of the Yucatan, parts of it felt quite wild west with their cattle ranches, cacti and frontier-like towns such as Creel.

Which was your favourite…

Place:  It has to be the Copper Canyon. It’s just incredible, not only beautiful scenery but I also loved learning about the Raramuri people who are indigenous to the area.  There are fun adventure activities to do too such as zip lining.

Hotel: El Mirador in the Copper Canyon. It overlooks the canyon itself and my balcony was the perfect place to watch the sunrise.

Excursion: A full day hike in the Pueblos Mancomunados which are in the countryside outside Oaxaca. The city of Oaxaca is a must-see but it is quite modern now whereas heading into the mountains you see a much more traditional way of life as well as being able to walk through some lovely scenery.

What were your most memorable moments? I certainly won’t forget zip-lining through Copper Canyon, once I’d got over my nerves I could take in my surroundings!

Were there any surprises along the way?  I was actually brave enough to taste a cricket at the local market in Mexico City.  I’m normally a bit squeamish when it comes to things like that but the Americans on the excursion tried them so I didn’t want to be a chicken!

What tips do you have for travellers wanting to visit the same destinations?  During my time in Mexico City, I stayed in the area of Condesa. I’ve always tended to be based in the centre before but actually being based slightly away from the bustle (and occasional protests!) of the centre worked out perfectly.  Condesa has lots of restaurants, cafes and boutiques and an attractive little park and then you’re just a short drive away from the centre.  So I’d visit the historic centre during the day but be based in Polanco or Condesa for the evenings and a night of peaceful sleep.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for? My tip would be to leave space in your luggage for all the crafts and food that you’ll want to bring home.

Any local snacks, dishes or drinks that should be sampled? There is so much amazing food in Mexico, be prepared for a little spice.  The freshly made tortillas, all the different salsas, horchata (rice drink), tacos, and fruit, to name just a few of my favourites.

Any restaurant or bar recommendations? I did an evening street food tour in Mexico City which I would thoroughly recommend.  You head to traditional street food vendors that you may be a little hesitant to try on your own and are rewarded with some of the best tacos in town.

Sum up your trip in a sentence? Diverse, active, fascinating and all topped off with great food!
