Travel experts Hannah Waterhouse and Alex Walker in Brazil's Chapada Diamantina

Travel expert Alex Walker reflects on her recent trip to see the wildlife of Brazil's Pantanal and stunning landscapes of Chapada Diamantina.

How did you get there?
We flew to Rio de Janeiro via São Paulo with LATAM Airlines. We made sure to leave plenty of time for the layover, since Brazil requires you to clear immigration at your first port of entry rather than your final destination.

How long was the trip?
We spent two weeks exploring Brazil.

Where in Brazil did you go?
We visited a variety of locations, including Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, the northern Pantanal wetlands, Salvador, Chapada Diamantina National Park and Praia do Forte.

What was your overall impression of the country?
Brazil is a vast and incredibly diverse country, offering unique culinary experiences, diverse climates, stunning landscapes, rich cultures and vibrant atmospheres in each region we visited.

Have you been to Brazil before? If so, any notable differences?
I had previously visited Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, but this time I felt significantly safer compared to my initial visit twelve years ago.

Which was your favourite...

  • Place: The Pantanal was undoubtedly our favourite, thanks to the incredible wildlife sightings. We saw so many species, including tapir, howler monkeys, porcupine, caiman, iguanas, parrots and macaws.
  • Hotel: Pousada Rio Mutum was a highlight, with curious wildlife such as tapir and capybaras roaming freely around the grounds. We even had to close the restaurant door to prevent a tapir from joining us for lunch!
  • Excursion: The early morning wildlife safaris in the Pantanal were truly magical. Getting up at 4am might seem early, but the experience of witnessing the animals awaken under the vibrant red sky was unforgettable.

What were your most memorable moments?
Two particular moments stand out: swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Azeda Beach in Búzios, surrounded by turtles and having the beach entirely to ourselves.

Were there any surprises along the way?
We were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of plant-based dining options, particularly in Chapada Diamantina and Praia do Forte. As a vegan, it can sometimes be a bit difficult for me to find great food in Latin America, so it’s always lovely when somewhere has lots of options!

What tips do you have for travellers wanting to visit the same destinations?
The vast distances within Brazil, combined with frequent layovers in São Paulo, can make travel times lengthy. To avoid exhaustion, it's wise to plan your itinerary carefully and avoid overpacking your schedule.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?
A lightweight, breathable shirt is essential for the Pantanal, as it provides protection from both the sun and mosquitoes. Additionally, a versatile travel adapter is crucial, as plug sockets can vary between regions and hotels.

Any local snacks, dishes or drinks that should be sampled?
North-eastern Brazilian cuisine is truly exceptional, with many dishes offering vegan-friendly alternatives. Consider trying dishes like casquinha de siri (made with cabbage), moqueca with plantain or okra, and even plantain ceviche.

Any restaurant or bar recommendations?
Cozinha Aberta in Lençóis is a must-visit. This delightful restaurant serves delicious homemade Bahian-Italian fusion cuisine, incorporating fresh herbs, spices and vegetables sourced from their own garden.

Sum up your trip in a sentence?
A fantastic introduction to the country, offering a diverse experience that included bustling cities, cultural immersion, incredible wildlife encounters and the stunning natural beauty of Chapada Diamantina.
