Sales Team Supervisor and Senior Travel Consultant Mary revisits Uruguay after nearly 30 years.

Which country did you visit?

Uruguay

How did you get there?

I flew with Air Europa via Madrid

Where did you go?

I visited several places, Montevideo, Rocha and then travelled along the coast from Punta del Diablo towards Punta del Este via Jose Ignacio and La Barra. Also several vineyards in Garzon and Eden Valleys and then moved to the other side and visited Carmelo and Colonia.

Have you been before?

Once, about 3 decades ago and only to Montevideo to visit some friends during the winter.

Were there any notable differences?

Well, considerable, but it is always different when visiting friends rather than being a tourist, so this time I really did appreciate the country!

Which was your favourite...

URU_Colonia_MAN

Place: Colonia for the slow pace, and Punta del Diablo for the wild beach.
Hotel: Fasano Las Piedras
Excursion: All the wine tasting! And the horse riding

URU_BodegaCordano_MAN

What was your most memorable moment?

An impromptu wine and liquor tasting at Bodega Cordano, a 100+ year old winery. This ended with the most delicious tasting of all sorts of snacks, both savoury and sweet, and sampling their range of wines and liqueurs. It was the easy going and friendly nature of the hosts, their obvious pride and infectious enthusiasm that made the day. And of course, the amazing wines!

What tips do you have for travelers wanting to visit the same destination?

This is for those who like a slow pace, good food, relaxed conversation, landscapes and wild beaches. And wine, lots of it. It's better to go during the summer if you want to include a visit to the beach, as outside of the summer season everything is closed and it can feel a bit isolated. Having said that, I would consider the tail end of the summer to avoid too many people! Visits to one or two wineries are a must, as is a nice lunch at Mercado del Puerto in Monteverde - though this might not be suitable for vegetarians. Also good for those who like horse riding.

Is there anything indispensable to pack or prepare for?

Beside an empty stomach, just a good and relaxed disposition.

Sum up your trip in a sentence?

Eat, drink and chill.
