Discover the best things to do in Santiago.

Visit Cerro Santa Lucia

In fact the remnant of a 15-million-year-old volcano, Santa Lucía Hill is an oasis of calm in the middle of Santiago. Ornate buildings, fountains and stairways lead you up to a viewpoint with pretty views of the surrounding area. Take a moment to relax in the tranquil Japanese gardens.

Keep an eye out for fantastic street art

The port city of Valparaíso is probably better known for its edgy art scene, but Santiago does offer up some vibrant street art to rival that of its more bohemian northern neighbour. Keep an eye out for the striking murals adorning the city’s walls and visit the Museo A Cielo Abierto (Open Sky Museum) to see a broad range of works from local artists.

Visit La Moneda

Occupying an entire block in downtown Santiago and one of the city’s most famous spots, La Moneda is the country’s government palace. Although restored following the damage caused by bombardment during the 1973 coup d’état, some bullet holes can still be seen today. An idiosyncratic schedule is in place for the changing of the guards but if you’re lucky you might catch it!

Eat at a Liguria restaurant

All of the Ligurias dotted around the city feel like classic Chile rolled up into a bar and restaurant: vintage décor, rows and rows of great wines, friendly staff, homely food and a bustling atmosphere make this a dining experience not to be missed.

Explore Barrio Italia

Long a hidden gem of Santiago, the neighbourhood of Barrio Italia is definitely on the up. Spend some time wandering its flea markets, quirky boutiques, antique shops and art galleries but be sure not to head over here any earlier than 11am – it’s a laid-back part of town that likes a lie-in.
