Costa Rica’s Fourth World Heritage Site: Diquis Stone Spheres

Discovered in the 1930s in the Diquís Delta, the Diquís Spheres have since been a mystery to all, including archaeologists. Although polished stone orbs have since been found (up to 300) across Costa Rica, the Diquís region became the most interesting, due to the discovery of the largest sphere as well as the sheer quantity found.
Believed to be hand carved around 600AD, the purpose of these spheres has yet to be discovered, although many myths have arisen. Their increased popularity is due to their perfection, size, and mystical appearance which has meant that nearly all of the spheres have been relocated and can be found scattered all over Costa Rica for decorative purposes in official buildings, museums, schools and other locations.
June this year, 2014, UNESCO announced the Diquís Spheres as the country’s 4th World Heritage Site, declared as Heritage of Humanity.
