Overview

Lying around 120km southwest of the capital Stanley, Sea Lion is the southernmost inhabited island of the Falkland archipelago. Having existed as a sheep farm for over 100 years, the 1990’s saw the island transform into a haven for ecotourists and researchers alike, with farming halted to enable the recovery of traditional wildlife. Today the island supports a flourishing ecosystem which includes flowers not found on any of the other islands, along with thriving colonies of elephant seals, Magellanic, rockhopper and gentoo penguins, and, of course, sea lions. The success of this wildlife recovery has led to Sea Lion becoming one of the Falkland’s most popular spots for visitors. The one lodge on the island is often booked up many months in advance, meaning early booking is essential.
