Overview
Many visitors pass through Lima all too briefly en route to Cusco and Machu Picchu, but Peru's capital city has much to offer for a few days. Lovers of architecture will enjoy the monumental cathedral and the Presidential Palace on the Plaza de Armas, as well as Lima's cluster of colonial churches such as Monasterio de San Francisco and Iglesia de Santo Domingo. Lima also has its own ancient site: the impressive 2000-year-old pre-Inca ceremonial site of Huaca Pucllana, built with millions of adobe bricks.
Foodies will delight in one of Latin America's gastronomic centres. Lima has several of the world's top restaurants, so feasting on mouthwatering ceviche is a must in the city's many award-winning restaurants.
Explore Lima's colonial heart, visit the city's many museums, then head to the Pacific coast and the modern middle-class suburbs of Miraflores and Barranco, brimming with sophisticated restaurants, boutiques and live music.

Where to go when - our guide to Lima

The weather in Lima is wide and varied
It almost never rains in Lima, and temperatures are moderate year round, although the city is shrouded in a dull grey mist (garúa) from May to October. The sun does break through between November and March when happy limeños spill out onto the pavement bars, ice cream parlours and beaches. Visitors in October are likely to notice many women wearing purple to mark the Señor de los Milagros celebrations, which culminate in large religious processions towards the end of the month.
