Overview
Panama may be most famous for its canal, one of the great engineering feats of the 20th century, but the country also has some of the world’s most untouched areas of rainforest. There’s a diverse wildlife population, with bird and mammal species found nowhere else on the planet.
Fringing the jungle are 3,000km of beautiful coastline with coral reefs, islands and undeveloped beaches. There are also plenty of vestiges of the country’s wild history of pirates and smuggled gold: colonial forts, shipwrecks, cannons and towering city walls tell a colourful story.

Where to go when - our guide to Panama

The weather in Panama is wide and varied
The most southerly of the Central American nations, Panama also represents the narrowest point of the land mass separating the Caribbean from the Pacific. Situated well within the tropics, Panama has all round high temperatures (30°C) along the coasts and lowland regions. The western mountains provide a higher altitude and corresponding lower temperatures, especially at night.
Panama can be visited all year round but the best time to visit is from mid-December to mid-April, when there is less rain. The majority of significant events fall during these months, including celebrations of Semana Santa (Easter) and Carnival (February - March). This is also when the Panamanians tend to explore their own country, so most regions tend to be busier. Outside of these months the country experiences a wetter climate, with short, sharp rains. Panama has a lower risk of tropical storms than its northerly neighbours thanks to its location outside the hurricane belt.
