Kunuk Hotel Boutique
Kunuk's Caribbean blue-and-white exterior is as striking as a piece of Wedgwood china and so it seems fitting that this hotel was previously the home of an English artist and collector.
Examples of the previous owner’s works and eclectic displays of books and artifacts still occupy the elegant early 20th century Porfiriato townhouse where guests will find today’s reception, bar and Mexican-tiled dining room.
With its galleries and high ceilings you might feel that you've arrived at the mansion of a wealthy friend in Merida. Stepping outside, the hotel’s dozen or so guest rooms are in a new section across the garden. These range from compact yet well-equipped standard rooms to spacious suites where you may linger with a mezcal from the minibar.
The rooms are contemporary in style and design but not at the expense of Mexican flavour, featuring arts and crafts from the Oaxaca region as well as mats and chairs made of sisal from Yucatán.
Meanwhile Kunuk’s shady garden patio offers respite from Merida’s legendary afternoon heat, inviting guests to relax. There’s also an ornamental pool in which to dip your toes.
