Mexico is a huge country - eight times bigger than Britain - with a wonderful variety of landscapes, climates and traditions to match. Explore ancient Mayan ruins, magnificent mountains, rich rainforest and thriving indigenous cultures with award-winning Mexico holidays from experts Journey Latin America.

Overview

Mexico has some of Latin America's most stunning ancient ruins. Discover Aztec and Mayan sites: magnificent pyramids and temples at archaeological sites such as Chichén Itzá and Tulum on the Yucatan peninsula, as well as graceful colonial towns and haciendas, and a timeless indigenous way of life that continues in the villages and markets. Mexico is particularly famous for its vibrant, colourful festivals such as the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca and Mexico City, one of the world's greatest cities.

The countryside is stunning too: a spine of rippling mountains, studded with armies of cacti, while much of the coastline is enveloped in dripping rainforest. All this is fringed by sugary beaches and aquamarine seas. Mexico is a modern country with a robust emerging economy, and an efficient road and air network linking major attractions.

Where to go when - our guide to Mexico

Day of the Dead

The weather in Mexico is wide and varied

Mexico is an enormous country with a variety of landscapes and climates to match. The best time to visit depends on your priorities. For exciting cultural events, you’d do well to visit during Day of the Dead on 1-2 November, with colourful parades and skeletal costumes, or on Independence Day on 16 September which is celebrated with military parades and cries of ‘Viva Mexico!’ For outdoor adventures and sports including hiking, mountain biking and snorkelling, it is advisable to visit during the drier season from November - April, which offers cooler temperatures, clearer seas and reduced rainfall across the country. Visit Baja California or Puerto Vallarta between January - March to catch sight of humpbacks, blue and gray whales which breed and calve in the sheltered tropical bays. Between May and October there is more rainfall across the country, with hotter temperatures and higher humidity, particularly around the coastal areas. The busiest months for visitors are December - January and July - August, when you can expect lively crowds and a buzzing atmosphere.
