Overview
Despite its foreboding name, Bleaker is actually one the Falkland’s most scenic islands. The misnomer comes from a corruption of its original name ‘Breaker’, which stems from the crushing effect the flat lowlands have on the ocean waves that arrive on its shallow shores. Around 85km southwest of Stanley, the island has some of the archipelago’s most beautiful beaches and is home to a huge variety of wildlife. As well as 3 types of penguin, visitors can observe sea lions hunting and playing in the surf, and mighty elephant seals groaning and belching as they bulldoze into one another in a display of strength, dominance and general grumpiness.
