San Agustin Archaeological Park
Hundreds of enigmatic carved statues of humans and animals are scattered over an area of beautiful hills at San Agustin in Colombia's Beautiful South.
We are delighted that it is now safe for visitors to resume visits to San Agustin Archaeological Park, one of the continent’s most fascinating collection of pre-Columbian artifacts and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Covering an impressive 500 square km it comprises the largest group of religious monuments and megalithic statues in South America.
Gods and mythical animals are represented in styles from abstract to realist. The statues were sculpted by a mysterious Andean culture between the 1st and 8th centuries AD and stud a wide area of forested hillsides cut through by waterfalls, with impressive views. There are numerous trails which you can explore on foot and there’s an impressive museum.
