Overview
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is an incredible and unique place. Chilean territory but isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this tiny isle of volcanic origin, first populated by Polynesians from the west, has become a mesmeric destination for visitors.
Once densely forested and fertile, the rugged, hilly island supported a prosperous population which sculpted the island’s enigmatic moai, or giant stone heads. The landscape is now covered by rocky, treeless grasslands, beautiful in its gaunt and haunting way, and the coast is defined by rocky coves and the occasional sparkling white beach.

Where to go when - our guide to Easter Island

The weather in Easter Island is wide and varied
Though officially Chilean territory, this volcanic island lies thousands of miles apart from the mainland, isolated in the middle of the Pacfic Ocean. Its climate remains tropical and warm throughout the year, with cool ocean breezes playing over the rolling grasslands and rocky coves. The island is best known for its moai, the enigmatic stone heads dotted across the land, which attract visitors from all corners of the globe. Summer here runs between December - February, with the most visitors arriving at this time to make the most of soaring temperatures (in the high 20°Cs) and less rainfall. The Tapati Rapa Nui festival in the first two weeks of February offers an enthralling range of traditional challenges to spectate, from bare horseback riding to tree climbing competitions, with representatives from local families competing against one another.
The months of April - June and September - November are a good choice if you seek fewer visitors and comfortable, slightly cooler temperatures with lower humidity. Make the most of these conditions to hike to some of the island’s most iconic moai sites, passing jagged cliffs and glittering white beaches.
