Above El Chaltén, turquoise lagoons and lush beech forests skirt the ice-capped towers of the Fitz Roy massif. With trails galore, this is a walker’s paradise.

Overview

A scenic 3-hour drive from El Calafate, the northern part of Los Glaciares National Park is characterised by dark beech forests, gem-clear lagoons and the lonely steppes skirting the ice-capped towers of the Fitz Roy massif. The settlement of El Chaltén has grown rapidly over the years into a base for outdoor adventures, with a clutch of lively little eateries and watering holes, and a wide range of accommodation from rustic, cosy inns to increasingly smart lodges. Walking the trails here is a feast for the eyes. And if you’re lucky with the Patagonian weather, it may turn out to be one of those life-affirming experiences you never forget.

Where to go when - our guide to El Chalten and the Fitz Roy Massif

Mount Fitz Roy in Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia

The weather in El Chalten and the Fitz Roy Massif is wide and varied

Turquoise lagoons and lush beech forests skirt the ice-capped towers of the Fitz Roy massif. The landscapes are perfect for hikers, though you’ll want to plan your trip around the seasonal changes in weather conditions. The peak summer months (December - February) offer the most reliably warm and clear weather but also attract the highest volume of visitors. The pleasant shoulder seasons of spring and autumn offer blooming wildflowers and rich golden foliage respectively, with mild weather conditions and fewer crowds. In winter the climate grows cold, with snow storms and rainfall making some trails inaccessible.
