Annabel was first drawn to Latin America after reading about the Amazon rainforest as a child- Eva Ibbotson’s ‘Journey to the River Sea’ and Isabel Allende’s ‘City of the Beasts’ inspired a life-long dream of visiting this region herself. Studying Spanish at University in Leeds brought about the incredibly exciting opportunity to work as an English teacher in a Colombian University for a year with the British Council. Living and teaching in Bogotá was an inspiring experience which solidified her love of many aspects of Latin American culture and life: independent cinema, diverse Latin music, delicious local cuisines, indigenous languages and cultures and the astounding biodiversity of the region. During this year Annabel travelled extensively across Colombia and also visited Chile and Peru. Her favourite locations include Colombia’s Lago de Tota (a serene lake high up in the mountains of Boyocá), Chile’s Valparaíso for the creativity of its local artists, and above all the Amazon regions of both Peru and Colombia for the sense of mystery found deep in the rainforest.

She recently returned from a year living in Hanoi, Vietnam, where she helped organising an international arts festival and is excited to begin her journey working with our Marketing team.

What Is Your Favourite...

Place:

Without a doubt I’d have to say the Amazon rainforest- for me, nothing beats diving into the river during heavy rainfall or watching pink dolphins surface as the sun rises on the water.

Hotel:

Nothing tops the views from the thatched cabins of Tayrona Eco Habs Canaveral. Nestled within Parque Tayrona, you can wake up surrounded by tropical forest and idyllic sandy coves.

Exploring in the Cocora Valley was a highlight of my time in Colombia- hummingbirds flit among the thick forests and the soaring palms are unforgettable.

Top Travel Tip

Try where possible to learn the language, even if this means just a few basic phrases. Being able to interact with local people opens up so many opportunities to learn and have new experiences.

Come prepared to take a dip! Latin America offers any number of serene lagoons, aquamarine seas and natural hot springs to swim in. It’s a wonderful way to feel more connected to the nature around you.
